No standby/hibernate possible-windows 2000

A colleague has a laptop with Windows 2000. Last month he had some damaged files repaired by networking to another PC. Since then the laptop will not go into standby/hybernate mode. It keeps coming up with a message of network resources being needed. I have removed his antivirus which was searching for ISP (no internet connection working at present),
Any idea what network resources might be staying open or is it a reload OS disc solution!
