No Sound With Video & Errors With Music

I'm having enough problems with my old laptop so I started using my newer one that has Windows 8. When I play video there's no sound and I hear sound effects from Windows. When I try to play music my Windows Media Player doesn't work where it says it encountered an error. What is going on here? I've got enough problems with crackles, buzzing and static with my old PC where it seems the sound card it screwed and I thought I'd use my newer laptop and now it seems I'm not allowed to use that one either with the crap going on? How do I get the sound back and how do I get rid of that stupid error with music? Thanks.
