No sound / sound card (?) onn laptop

  PS33 10:07 02 Oct 09

I bought an old IBM thinkpad T41 from my firm and it has no sound.

It says no device installed, so I guess I need to purchase a soundcard. I don't know what to look for. I don't need state of the art. Just some sound.

What do I need ?

Any help gratefully received....

If you right-click My computer, then left-click Properties, Hardware, Device Manager, Sound, Video and game Controllers - what's listed?

Being a Thinkpad (laptop) you can't buy a sound card as this will be built into the motherboard.

The 'sound card' is most probably in place, but you just need the drivers for it.

Try this link and then click on 1ga241ww.exe

Hi Both,

Thanks for the steers.

On "Sounds and Audio Devices" I've got "No audio devices".

What to do next please??

With thanks

Sorry, didn't answer fully:

"Sound, video & game controllers" shows
Audio codecs
legacy audio drives
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video codecs

All drivers now up to date but silent

Have you tried clicking on the volume control in case your works muted or turned down the sound

The support site gives a list of steps to try: click here

I wouldn't recommend trying to update the bios but setting the system to its default state and the other troubleshooting steps look helpful.
