No sound on laptop with dvds recorded from TV

I've got a new laptop which plays digital video extracts (recorded from TV) which I've put on the hdd and commercial dvds properly. However, when I attempt to play TV programmes recorded to dvd disks (which worked on my old laptop), I don't get any sound - though the picture is OK. This is the case with Media Player and Power DVD. There must be some software tweaking I need to do but don't know what it is. I'm using XP.

That could be the solution but the technicians at school have administrator rights and I don't and they're slow to do things and generally unhelpful...
