No sound following windows update

  Snill 10:04 05 Jul 03

It seems that the latest windows update from Microsoft has disabled my sound card.
I have an on-board VIA sound card. Device manager says all working correctly but there is nothing in my preferred device box. Dxdiag says I have no sound card. This is nonsense because it was working perfectly three days ago and the only thing I've done to the pc since is download the standard updates which MS sends. Could it be that all off a sudden microsoft have decided that my sound card is no longer supported?
I have tried a system restore to try and get the old settings back but it won't allow me to even look at June let alone select a restore point.
I really don't want to have to format and reload if it can be helped.
Thanks for any help/suggestions. 11:21 05 Jul 03

I sometimes find that an update has altered my settings in my sound card
Try Control Panel - Audio HeadQuarters (or wherever your card is based) and see that the imput is still selected to whatever you are using.
CD, Midi, Input 1, etc.
Also see that the Volumes (Playback and Record)are raised, and selected to your preferences.
Are you digital or Analogue, and is it set to your preference.
