I have just bought a Plextor 716A DVD recorder. When I play a DVD film there is no sound. Sound is AC97 on motherboard. I have an anoloue cable form recorder to motherboard. I have sound with DVD's I have made myself with my pictures and music, and I can also play CD's. Any ideas.

I think it is most likely that there is a volume setting in your DVD playing software that is set too low. The analogue cable is unlikely to have any effect because nearly all sound from a CD / DVD player these days is digital. I would also recommend that you fit a PCI sound card. I find that even the cheapest ones are much better than onboard sound.
