No sound on DVD

My Evesham PC, running XP with SP2 and live updates, recently malfunctioned and I had to use the Evesham recovery disc.

I reinstalled MS Office and just the programs I actually use and they are working properly .

The only exception is the audio from DVDs played through Windows Media Player. Before recovery the sound was OK. ( Version 11.0.5721.5230)

CDs perform OK via Creative 5.1 on the same player.

I note that quite a few Codec's are listed under help - About Windows Media Player as being included but do I require an additional one?

Is it possible the one of the programs I haven’t re installed contain the necessary Codec perhaps.

I am not an anorak so please keep the explanation as simple as possible.

Skidzy he was given that advice a few days ago on another forum never came back with his findings. Perhaps assuming anyone who can help is an anorak is offputting Ha!
