No sound - Driver Problem?

  Ankermi31 08:57 01 Sep 08

Windows XP

Trying to play ITunes and film downloads and discovered no sound.

Driver is a C-media AC97

Device Manager confirms there is a problem with the sound, audio etc.Got the yellow "blob"

Tried to roll back and the troubleshooter and that seems to go no where

Have googled and found various downloads.

Advise sought please.

click here seems to be the latest XP driver for most of the c-media chips. You need to download it and run it to update your sound.

Goodmorning on Monday!

OK we have tried the two suggestions and still no sound anywhere.

Suspect it could be sound card?

Try .Control Panel.Administrative Tools.Services.Scroll down to Windows Audio and make sure it is set to automatic. You can also check that the sound is enabled in the Bios but not sure how you go about it.

Is it a separate sound card then or one built into the motherboard? If the former you can try replacing it with another one. If the latter then as buteman says you need to enter the BIOS and find the Integrated Peripherals section, Onboard Device Setup, Audio Enable. It will be a sequence something like that.

If sudio is enabled in the BIOS and your driver is OK then it looks as if the sound chip has failed and then you will need to add a separate PCI Audio Card.
