No Sound

When i try to play a CD on my computer it seems to be playing ok but there is no sound. An error message appears saying: Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding.
I have used these speakers with this computer less than 2 weeks ago and they worked fine and i cant think what i could have changed. Anybody any ideas.

the hardware the error refers to if the sound card. Is it onboard or a separate card? Check in device manager.

control panel> system> hardware> device manager.
