For Win 98 try this:

You can start Volume Control by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to Entertainment, and then clicking Volume Control.

By email 'using XP & aol8 broadband'

Steveybhoy, please use 'Add response' below.

Has the sound just stopped? You're not giving us much to go on. Is it Windows sounds or CD player?

Both, sound was ok 2 days ago, opened comp this afternoon & nothing. Was thinking of using system restore

Don't panic, Capt.Mainwairing! Are the speakers mains powered?

well they plug into the back of the pc

No seperate mains connection?

None, just ran direct x diagnostic tool & confused myself even further

OK, you need to check in Device Manager to see if your sound card drivers are happy.
