no signal message on monitor

Have switched pc on as normal but the monitor says no signal and switches itself off (the monitor light goes from green to orange). I assume the CPU is working ok but have no way of knowing as I can't see anything on screen. I assume the problem is the monitor or lead - but I checked the connections and got nowhere. The PC is not old (Oct 07). Any ideas what the problem could be please? I am not at all techie and have never done anything with the insides of the CPU.
Thanks

Could be monitor or lead, as you say, or graphics card (which is probably integral with the mobo). Could you borrow monitor and lead from someone? If it still doesn't work, it's probably the card.
