This might be a really stupid question - so i apologize in advance for my lack of tech knowledge. I recently got a "Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File Is Too Small" error message on restarting my pc. This may or may not be related to problems I've been having downloading files bigger than about 1mb.

According to microsoft click here

This issue may occur with certain Intel chipsets - now here's where I show my ignorance - I don't know what my motherboard is - although I do know I'm running an athlon processor - should I download the recommended Intel Application Accelerator (IAA) for Windows XP or would this not apply as I'n not using an Intel processor?

I wouldn't install an Intel fix for an Athlon!

anskyber I had a look at your link - I gotta be honest and admit much of it went over my head - I have ticked the box to let windows manage the page file in the hope that it knows better than me :)
