no internet

I have used this computer to go on the internet for two years,
First with Windows 98SE, lately with XP Home.
I have not installed or uninstalled any thing lately.
Now when I click on Outlook Express, or Internet Explorer,
I get an error message. Socket Error 11004
No dialing tone, error 0x800cccdd.
My Modem says ?No Conflicts ?,
My COM Port 1 says ?No Conflicts ?,
I have tried another Modem, got the same result,
I have also tried a different Tellephone cable.
And a different socket
On my other XP computer, (in another room ),
I can get on the internet no problem.

I have now discovered that a spare computer Windows 98SE
That I have in the loft, will not connect to the internet,
It gives the same error as above

Is the telephone socket in the room where you are having the problems working ok?

It may be your phone extension that is the problem not the computer.
