A little Punctuation would help me understand your posting more easily.

Have you checked the Power supply to the monitor?

When you installed the new graphics card, did you check that all the other cards and memory were properly seated?

Have you checked that all the pins are, in place and not bent, on the connecting cable?

An onboard graphics port?

If yes, try disconnecting the new card and plugging the monitor onto the onboard graphics.
Do you see anything?
If yes, drop to the bios and change the AGP to Auto.

Thanks for the reply

no bent cable pins
I have tried a monitor known to work on this pc
no on board graphics
monitor goes onto stanby after a few seconds

do you think that it could be psu probs

do you think that getting a psi card may be worth a try

Try booting from a xp cd instead of HDD, does the screen stay on.
If so carry out a repair instalation of XP.

Do you get either 1 short beep, a series of beeps or no beeps at all? This could point to the problem...

Do you get anything on the screen at all before it goes back into standby or does it just stay blank?

  rodriguez 14:22 08 Nov 06

Also did you used to always get 1 short beep when it was working properly?
