No CD drive

  pypes 00:06 05 Aug 04

Hi - hope someone can help.
Have Athlon 2200 + windows ME + CDRW.

On boot up, bios detects HD as primary master and CD as slave - both on same IDE cable. However nothing appears in explorer or device manager to say CD exists, Tray opens - light comes on.
Have fitted old cd rom and changed cables etc - no change. Pulling out hair - any suggestions ??

"both on same IDE cable"

i would put the cdrw on the second ide channel as master. keep hard drives and cd dvd drives seperate.

Have you checked the jumpers on the cd drive, that they are set to slave....TT

Losing optical drives seems to be happening a lot lately. If you haven't changed anything :-

Run regedit and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Highlight it and in the right pane, find the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values. Highlight each one in turn, right click and delete them. Close regedit and restart the computer.
