No Boot on 1st switch on - ?graphics card problem

Since installing a BFG GeForce 6800GT OC 256Mb PCI-E into my Compaq Presario SR1519 PC I have found that I have to switch on twice (eg on,off,on) to get as far as the Boot screen.

I recently installed a Trust 550W PSU over the original 300W one in order to see whether the card wasn't getting enough current. But this didn't solve the problem.

Uninstalling the card and booting returns the system to a state of 1st time booting.

The specs are:
Compaq Presario SR1519 - AMD Athlon64 3200
MSI MS-7184 Amethyst with Phoenix BIOS (updated to v3.47)
2GB DDR Corsair memory, 1 DVDRW and 1 HD.
Windows XP SP2 all updates.

Are NVdia graphics cards compatible with ATI motherboards? Or is there something else I can try?

I wonder if updating the NVDia drivers would make any difference to the system? Although it looks to be an initialisation problem rather than weird output on the screen.

Any help?

Power Saving mode was set to Energystar - probably after some upgrade or other!

Machine switches on OK now.
