No beep at startup

The PC powers up - i.e. fans spin up and HDD power LED comes on but no POST beep. The HDD activity light does not come on, and the CD and DVD drives will not open (they would appear to not be getting power)

It seems that the PSU (4 years old) has given up the ghost. Video cards etc and RAM are all inserted and seated correctly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Unplug CD and DVD drives and HDD and see if it will boot to error message.

You are probably right that PSU is faulty although one of the drives could be pulling down the supply.

Possibly either the PSU has given up, or the cables are broken?

Thanks for the fast response folks.

Fruit Bat /\0/\ - tried unplugging all IDE devices. No error messages, but when the CD/DVD molex plugs are removed (with the HDD molex connected) the orange HDD activity light comes on (faintly) but the HDD does not spin up. It would seem that not enough current is being produced.

X™ - I replaced both ribbon cables and no joy I'm afraid.

I'll change out the PSU and report back.

New PSU has everything back to normal. Thanks for the help.
