No audio device

I have no sound on my computer (Windows XP). Going into 'Sounds' shows "No audio Device". Going into system-device manager shows a C-Media AC97 Audio Device which is "working properly"

Goto CONTROL PANEL , SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES PROPERTIES and ensure nothing is muted. If you see nothing reinstalling the sound card software may cure it, the sound card software will be on the driver disk for your motherboard.

Everything appears ok. Playback device is listed as "Modem#1 line playback" with no options in drop-down menu.

Uninstall and reinstall the C media AC97. Sound setup

Unfortunately, Sounds & audio devices only shows Modem#1 line as the default player with no other options in the drop-down menu.

Do you have the CD that you got with your motherboard with the drivers on it, the AC97 sound driver is on that.
