No active drives recognised

A mate has downloaded the windows validation tool and has found he was sold a p.c (second hand) with a dodgy version of XP.
Result? i can't even format it for him, as it either says no active patition and no hardware detected.
what does this tool do?
he's forked out £70 for a legal disc, but its useless as we can't get rid of the old version!
any way of formatting or releasing the damned hardware?

Download KillDisk click here after that, Set Bios to Boot from CD as first boot device. Then just start with XP disc
