NiCad charger for NiMH batteries

  uncle eric 12:58 21 Aug 04

I have a NiCad battery charger.

Can I safely use it to re charge NiMH batteries ?

If yes will there be any negative effects ?

What are the technical differences ?

Seems silly to buy a NiMH charger if this one is suitable ?

I would be careful, not all chargers do it, some have a switch, mide you the one i have says it does both and no switch... :-)

no....Ni-Cd = 65mA / NiMh = 240mA you need a higher charge rate for NiMh

the answer is NO

You can buy all in one chargers that charge both(not at the same time)click here$cip=16706&categoryId=16706

I suspect that might just mean charging is slower than it might otherwise be. It will certainly be safe. I changed the original Ni-Cad batteries in my cordless phone for new NiMh batteries and it works faultlessly.

Hi All,

To follow up this topic. I saw a good offer at Currys yesterday.

Uniross charger and 4 * AA Ni-MiH 2000 Mah for £14-99. Pretty good offer I think.

Thanks for all the comments.

from 7dayshop:

4x 2400 mAh AA NiMh for £7.49. Still cheaper, and a higher capacity, (even with p/p).

Sorry Uncle Eric, I did not notice that the Curry`s offer included a charger.

However, 7dayshop have an offer of "8 x 2000" mAh AA NiMh, plus charger for £11.29, which is still cheaper, even allowing for the p/p.
