i took the plunge and bought ansli mobo with the nforce 4 chipset. i am currently using an nforce 2 chipset mobo. do you think it will be possible to use the new drivers like an upgraded version or will a format be in the offing?

If you mean nVidia drivers, which used to be known as Detonator and now nForce, then these drivers are fully backwards compatible.

For more information on nVidia drivers and how to configure them to the best of their ability (plus using RivaTuner) see:

harps1h, the motherboard drivers for nforce 4 chipsets are different to the drivers for nforce2/nforce3 boards, so a fresh install would be the way to go.
