When shutting down the PC I get a "safe to turn off" sort of message and then have to press the power down button to switch off.

Can I configure the PC to shut itself down?

click here and scroll down to "Powerdown Issues".

Thanks VoG™ but no joy , except that the reference to APM led me to a link which suggested I look in the Bios for "Enable APM".

This I did and indeed it was disabled but turning it on and saving to Cmos has made no difference.

I'm not trying to be funny here but did your computer shut down before and now it won't or has it always done this?

Totally-braindead -

I went out and bought a copy of XP Pro , installed and configured it , and the shutdown problem was there from the start.

However , looking around the net I have come to the conclusion that the Bios is the problem.

It seems that my version , dated August 2001 is too old to support this feature. [Advanced Power Management-APM]

Looks like i'll have to live with it.

I'll tick this now.

Thanks guys :-)
