Check netgear website for any driver updates for the router.

Are you using the cable which came with the router?

Update your ethernet card driver...

I have updated driver for the router.

I am using the cable which came with the router,
My ethernet card driver is up to date.

I think the problem may be that the lights on the front of the router keep flashing, I think I need them to be constant in order to have a good internet connetion. I have tried a couple of resets but nothing works.

OK, the lights are normal and will settle once the router has sorted itself out. you may have to leave it for a while. If the lights do not go 'steady' then unplug from mains for a couple of minutes, reboot the PC and replug again.

Once replugged it should go through the set up.
