New USB hard disk not appearing as a drive

  as400man 19:48 15 Oct 04

I have just plugged in my new usb hard drive and it powers up and shows as a removable device but it does not appear as drive in XP.
Using System Tools the drive appears and updating the driver results in 'cannot find a better driver' message. So XP is seeing the drive but Explorer cannot see it. Any ideas?

Thanks and regards as always,
Chris Powell

Have you formated?

Right click my computer, pick manage, then disk management and see if it is listed on the right hand window.

Right click a section of the drive and you should get either initialise the drive or partition/format the drive.

This should then put the drive in explorer.

dan11 is quite correct in his instructions.
I had the same trouble with my USB2 external hdd
and did as dan11 has explained and all was fine.

I can now use the drive. Cheers.
