hi people,
after constructing my new pc, i went on to put my copy of windows xp which i had previously used on my old system and it will not let me activate it with that product key! Can anyone help please?

thanks, Nathan

If this is an OEM copy then it's locked to the old PC so you can't do it. Either buy a new copy or ring MS and see if they'll give you a new key.

If Retail then ring MS and explain the problem.

Give them a ring 0870 60 10 100,and explain the situation. They tried to convince me to buy a new copy (who wouldn't over a £100 a time), but in the end they reset my product key and therfore got a new installation i.d. Then I registered this and got a new confirmation I.D

That's all you can legally do. Sorry. If you don't like it - tough. MS made XP lock itself to each PC when you build it hence you can't activate it on another PC.

If you want cracks go to another site that deals with that sort of thing.

i didnt ask for cracks so stop getting lairy! cheers alex

The fact is that you've been given perfectly good advice here. If you want to use a legitimate copy of Windows XP and you can't activate with the key you have you'll have to phone Microsoft and obtain a new activation key - which they will happily give you, once you've spoken to an activation desk agent.
