New PSU: how many watts should I need?

  bazbazbaz 20:50 15 Oct 03

When buying a case what PSU wattage should I be looking for? had my eye on an Antec 660 amg with 330w PSU but for an extra £18 there's the Antec 1080 amg with 430w PSU, dont like it so much but its a just a little more for an extra 100w, should I buy? TIA.

Not what watts...

A quality PSU is better.

Yep got to agree on that one, I have a 300watt but it?s a good one. If I was gaming and big graphics card I would be looking for min 350 to 400watt quality PSU. I have DVD CDRW etc no probs Athlon XP cpu

I have a Q-Tec 550W running my little PIII 500MHz, but have a 480W Antec True Blue running my XP2800 with Radeon 9600Pro.

As they're both Antec I would think that both are good quality, and if you want to run anything above a Geforece 3/Geforece 4 MX gfx card then I'd suggest the extra Watts may come in handy. Do check out the spec of both though just to check quality is equal.

As above if you're looking to be gaming, have a minimum of 400 'quality' Watts, the PSU may be pricey, but one that's not up to the job can cause a lot of problems and (so I've heard) damage the system.

(PS. If you don't mind spending a bit extra cash, select any case you want, but you could then swap out the standard PSU for a good quality one, that's what I did, but I wasn't looking for a bog standard case)

I built my new PC into an Antec 1080 amg last week and the extra 2 or 3 inches in height over the 660 could make your installation go easier. The previous week I helped a friend build into an Aztec Sonata which is just 1mm smaller than the 660 and it was very tight even getting the mobo in.I'm very pleased with the 1080 and bought another one to transplant my old PC innards into.

the biggest and best you can afford. It can move from case to case then and you wont have to worry about overloading it.

For value/build the Q-Tec 550W takes some beating.

I know nothing but I read Antec's PSUs are good, and checked out the rough guide thing, thanks all!
Leo49 I think I will get to 1080, I see it for £108 at Dabs where'd you get yours?
