New PC/Networking/Server setup

Hi, I'm looking for some advice on a setup that would suit my needs. I have a bit of PC building experience, but lack the technical knowledge when It comes to Networking/Servers etc.

Here's my scenario:

I have:

Room1:

1 Desktop PC setup with 2 1TB USB HDD's
1 Networkable multifunction
1 Wireless router (Sky router)
1 Laptop

Room2:

1 LCD tv
1 PS3 connected
1 cimena sound system (Sony HTFS 1300)

Ideally, I would like to store all my movies, pictures, files etc away on a server, or a NAS and be able to stream to the Laptop, Desktop and PS3

However, I quite like the idea of having Media Center or something similar on the TV in Room2.

So, here's my thinking:

Build a server, store all the files etc on that, and then connect over the network to it via the Laptop, Desktop and PS3.

Buy a mini shuttle or similar for the TV, and plug that into the TV, rather than the PS3, and stream all the data over to it.

What are your thoughts? If I were to build a server, what would the setup be?
