New to networking

Hi I wonder if you could help me with a bit of confusion. I am an AOL user with a router (supplied by aol). Previously I could not connect to the internet without first going on to aol. I now seem to be able to connect straight from Firefox without starting AOL.. WHy? Is there any settings I can look at?

That is because routers take the internet connection out of the control of the PC and are not controlled by any software or drivers. They replace a modem's conventional driver/hardware relationship with a host/client relationship and the WAN/internet connection comes under the sole control of the host's firmware.
