new to linux - help with modem please

After reading about all the happy Linux users for years, I thought I would give it a go. I have installed Ubuntu 7.04 as dual boot with my Xp set up, and straight away hit a major problem! First task was to get my dial up modem working (yes, I'm one of the last 6 remaining UK residents still using dial up) but I have discovered that I would need to pay £20 for drivers to get it working. Ridiculous when a pci card modem can be had for under £10! Does anyone know of a modem which will work "out of the box" in both XP and Linux?

Many thanks.

Hi djbenny. OK, here goes.....
It is a CNET Technology CN5614RS, chipset is RS56 combined BIF & LC 144 pin TQFP. I believe this may possibly be a re-named Conexant 1025/127A.
