I have got a new heatsink for my PC and I am wondering what I need to do to install it. I have done this befor but never on an old chip that has already had compound on it.

I have bought some new compound, although there is a little at the bottom of the new heatsink, will that suffice.

Will I need to remove the old compound?

Any help will be much appreiated.

Cheers

To remove old compound I just use a credit type card to scrape most of it off then use nail varnish remover to clean remainder.

Depends on what compound you have bought if its Arctic Silver I would clean off the heatsink,if its just ordinary stuff no need just use whats on the heatsink.
