I want to add a new hard disk but I need no more than a 30/40GB one. Is there any difference between the brands? Are some faster than others? I have a Dell Dimension 4100 with a 20GB drive which I intend to use as a backup.

I doubt there's much difference between brands other than price. Most models are 5400rpm or 7200rpm. Then you have to decide if you want it be ATA66/100/133 depending on your MOBO capabilties of course. Popular makes are Maxtor, Seagate, Western Digital to name a few.

The major ones are Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital, IBM etc., Fujitsu has had probs of dying on you although not all models. Go for either Seagate or Maxtor. I have used Seagate consistently over the years and so for no probs with them. Speed: Yes, a 7200 is faster than a 5400. Take your pick. Obviously, the 7200 is slightly more costly.
