You will needto "clone the disk" using specialist software if you want to copy the op system across.

Hard Disk Back UP:-
XXCopy click here

or Acronis true image

BEWARE - XXCOPY will not make a bootable clone of an XP system drive. It doesn't claim to and in fact warns that it cannot.

Acronis Trus Image will make such a clone, and will give you good service in the future for all types of backup startegies.

Also most hard drive manufacturers have a free download which will make a clone.

Try xxclone from click here

Your hard drive manufacturer's web site should have software downloads that will enable you to install your new disk as a slave, then transfer all the data including the o/s to the new disk, make the new disk the master and then remove the old disk

Seagate software does this like a dream with easy to follow instructions

The various responses to Donatello's query seem to suggest that simple copying from one disk to another
does not work with the operating system. Is this so?

What do the 'clone/backup' programs do that simple copying do not

An indepth explantion would be most welcome for future reference

after copy, you need to do some disk fix stuff to create a master boot record, with clone, everything will be done for you

as pointed out above, all HDD manufacturers have software free to download

if you really want to buy a program, Acronis True Image is great one click here, you can get from amazon click here

If you want to clone EVERYTHING from the old disk to the new Maxtor then use Maxblast 4 for Windows.
Download from Maxtors website
