New hard disk not recognized

  Chitterlow 00:45 14 Jul 04

I have installed a 160Gig HDD in my computer which runs on XP. The bios sees it and when booted up the device manager sees it and tells me it is working properly but My Computer does not see it and no drive letter has been assigned.
Is it because it is not yet formatted?
How do I format the drive if My Computer does not see it?.

Right click on your "My Computer Icon", choose manage/disk management then right click in the right hand pane of Disk 1 [Disk 0 is your master drive] choose partition and set the size as the whole of the drive or partition as you wish, format the drive from there, it will now show in your "My Computer" and be ready for use.

If you do a full format it may take over an hour for a disk of that size but as it's new you can choose the quick format, it will take only a few seconds. j.

Thank you very much for your great advice and quick response. My disk is now up and running.
