New Fax Modem won't work

I have just installed a new Zoom V.92 PCI fax modem into a new PC (running XP Pro) and cannot get it to work.

It looks fine in Device Manager and all seems to go fine except that when the sending box appears I cannot hear it dialling and after a few seconds it says 'line busy' (which, of course, it isn't).

Can anyone suggest what I can try to remedy this please?

how are you trying to connect to the phone line?

a dialup modem doesn't go via a filter like broad band.

BT installed a different gizmo that meant we didn't need to use filters on all the sockets any more.

My laptop can send faxes through the socket I'm using, without a filter. It just won't work with this modem.

Any dial-up device must go through a filter on an ADSL line.

I presume the "gizmo" is a centralised filter then?

I think you should cross-check that with BT.

Presumably you mean the BT I-Plate

Ignore my first post, worded very badly.
├četa and DieSse are correct.

Sounds like you have an "iplate" fitted.

Right click modem in device manager - properties - diagnostics - query modem.
Using the tabs you should be able to turn up the speaker volume to hear it dialling.

Speaker volume in Device Manager is at max.
Query Modem brings up all the 'readings', so that appears to be OK.

Surely, if a filter were needed it would affect the same function when faxing using my laptop on this phone socket, wouldn't it?

Meant to add that, still can't hear it dialling (or attaempting to).

try the modem in another slot.

Found a filter - tried it - made no difference, still says 'line busy'.
