new dvd writer not shown as drive (or anything)

I have just replaced my cd writer with a dvd writer and it dosn't show on the comp I must have put some wire in the wrong place (win xp home)as there is no indication of new hardware being added any help appreciated.

Make sure the IDA cable is the right way round. Normally the red edge of the cable is at the end adjacent to the power pins. Hope that makes sense.

Also is the drive being recognised in the BIOS.

Go into the BIOS and check it is showing. This is normally under the first heading in the Bios 'Standard CMOS Features'
