I have recently installed a new drive in my pc to supplement the existing IDE. I have added a SATA 80GB using a sata cable, however, on start up the drive is found but in MY COMPUTER there is no sign of it!. I think that the new drive will need formatting but how do I do this as in the hardware section there isn't an option of adding any drive letters

nope.

Its in Drive management in XP.

You have to go to Control Panel > Administrative > Computer management > Drive management.

Under your IDE one which should be staus healthy, then you should select the SATA one and press format.

However this may not work if you dont have SATA drivers installed.

BTW sometimes these are chipset drivers or controller drivers, but sometimes the MOBO manufacturers put them on seperate.
