New build Win 2000 freezing

Newly built PC: Gigabyte GA-7N400P m/b with Athlon K7-2600 chip & 512 Meg PC3200 memory
one 80Gig SATA HDD, Sony 16xDVD & floppy.
Installed Win2000Pro, after a few seconds of mouse movement & opening Control panel, system froze: no Ctr/Alt/Del avaiable. Ran OK in safe mode, everything apparently "working correctly" Applied the SR2 update for W2k; system now initialises to a frozen desktop. Works, as before in safe mode & still doesn't appear to recognise any problems at that point.
Apart from switching to an Apple Mac, any suggestions what to do next?

Likely a device driver, although it could also be a startup application.

Boot into Safe Mode again, and look at Device Manager, View, Show hidden devices, and see if there are any yellow exclamation marks.

Have you installed motherboard drivers from CD?

Also click Start, Run, type eventvwr.msc and press Enter.

Look at System Log and Application Log to see if there are any errors. Double click error to see error information. See if that gives you a clue.

Device Manager yellow exclamation marks were against Other: Ethernet; Multi-media; PCI; RAID; USB. M/B drivers CD would not execute in safe mode. Sys log & App log cleared & system booted to desktop, M/B drivers CD then ran OK & drivers updated, one system-controlled re-boot during this process & on completion a manual restart was prompted for.
Status bar froze during 'Starting windows' screen and does the same when Safe mode is attempted.
I believe I am now dead in the water!
