New Build Problems - Processor

  jg1990 15:06 27 Aug 04

Hi everyone.

I've just upgraded my system:
New Motherboard
New Processor (Athlon XP 3200)
New case.

I've got everything plugged in ok, but when I start the system it starts to bleep and the processor makes a burning smell.

I've checked the heatsink and it's fitted ok.

Can anyone please help?

Many Thanks

You will find that the heatsink has a blob of paste on the underside, protected by a plastic film. Have you removed the plastic film - if not, you will not have a proper contact between the CPU and the heat sink. You may already have fried your CPU - hope not!

If it starts to smell of burning immediately then I would suspect that it is not seated the correct way round or there is an inherant problem with either the cpu or motherboard.

I would take it out, check all the pins are straight and not shorting etc.

Thanks for your replies.

I discovered that the cause of the smell and bleeps was the stick of memory was in the wrong way.

However, I now have another problem. I cannot get the PC to boot up. The light on the motherboard indicates that the PC is in standby, when I press the power button nothing happens. It was working fine earlier and I having changed anything.

Can anyone help please?

Many Thanks

Are you still trying to use the same memory stick?

Switch off at socket wait ten sec and then attempt to reboot.

Yes, I'm using the same memory stick. I put it in my laptop to see if it still works and it does.

I've done what you suggested but still no joy.

Anyone know how to rectify this?

Many Thanks

You have all the power connections from the ON switch to motherboard in the correct order?

I had the system working fine earlier, I booted up then shut down.

Since then I haven't changed anything.

I'm beginning to think that the motherboard has failed.

Any ideas?

Many Thanks
