I'm trying to connect an XP laptop to a 2000 desktop via a crossover cable, but i need help with the set up procedure! Can anyone help, or know of a website with a step by step guide? I can't get the machines to see each other, but that's probably because i'm doing something wrong....

Step-by-step guide - click here

Most common reason for 2 PCs not to 'see' each other - firewalls. Make sure they are uninstalled while you set up the network, then reinstall when all is well.

in XP there is a HOME Network Setup utility, try running that and make a disc to use in the other machine.
It will do all you want to setup the link, so long as the hardware is working.
Good Luck.
