I am thinking of networking two computers both running windows xp home.

I read somewhere that windows xp firewall prohibits file and printer sharing. As the reason I want to network the machines is precicely so that I can have these facilities I find this quite annoying.

I have Norton Personal Firewall on both computers

My question is: does this situation apply to all firewalls or will Norton be ok

I think you have been misinformed. Any firewall, including the XP version and the Norton one, can be configured to allow full communication within a network.

They are really designed to block unwanted or unauthorised communication between the internal network and elsewhere (e.g. the Internet), although they can be used to block internal communication within the network if you wish.

Jazzypop is correct i run network with print and file sharing with nortons firewall. I ran the wizard for networks under the firewall and everything configured automatically. Good luck
