Networking via the ring main

I read somewhere that Powerline (and similar) plug-in units must be connected direct to the ring main (i.e. not via multi-socket extension cables, etc.).

I'd like to use the Powerline system to network the laptop in my living room to the desktop in my study, but I have everything connected to the mains via surge-protected extension cables.

Is it an either/or thing? Must I choose either surge protection or Powerline?

I've used HomePlug networking with extension socket/cable. No noticeable problems.

Many thanks, dms_05. I couldn't think of any reason not to do it, but I'm no expert.

Logging off now. Thunderstorms predicted for N. Ireland this afternoon.

I gave it a try with the laptop plugged into an extension cable. No problems. Thanks, dms_05
