Networking (hardwire) desktop to laptop.

I want to hardwire network my new(ish)laptop to my desktop. (Neither has a network card installed.)

I have set up a pc to pc network before but confess to being totoally ignorant when it comes to laptops.

What is the cheapest route to go down? What pitfalls should I try to avoid?

Thanks.

Use Ethernet network cards for both, and a length of Crossover Cat5 cable. You will need a PCI card for the desktop, and a PCMCIA card for the laptop.
