networking and firewall

I have just changed my wireless network set-up from peer to peer(USB wireless adaptor in each of 2 machines) to a router in desktop and wireless adaptor in laptop.
My query is now that I can access the internet from the laptop without the desktop machine being powered up, do I need a firewall on the laptop? (I have Norton on the desktop)

there might be 1 built into the router. i dont know how reliable they are. If not, you will need a firewall on the laptop too. Even if there is 1 on the router I would still use a free once for the laptop such as Zone Alarm

Thanks for the advice, I'll give Zone Alarm a try.
