network shared drive

i've just bought a network shared drive.
my system is...
main PC (win ME) hard wired to ntl broadband router, and one laptop taking a wireless feed.
i do as the instructions say, plug in lan cable and power cable, power up pc and drive then wait for the light to change from yellow to green. when it stays green, run the setup disk.
thing is it doesnt go green. it goes yellow green alternately which means it is not finding the PC. there are lights (4off)on the front of the router that light up when a hard wire is plugged in (there are 4 hard wire ports), the socket that the pc is plugged into is lit, but the network drive does not. i'm using the supplied ether cable, could it be the cable or something more sinister.?

For the initial configuration of the drive, have you tried connecting it directly to the PC and bypassing the router? The router's DHCP server will try to allocate an IP address to the network drive and this *might* cause a problem, particularly if they operate in different subnets.

thanks i'll try that, but what happens if by connecting directly it works?
i will ultimately want to have it on the router so that my laptop can see it and my pc can see it

What I'm suggesting is that you get it working with a direct connection between PC and drive. Once you know what you are doing and, in particular what the IP addressing issues are, you can set it up via the router again.

You need to know if it has a fixed IP address and, if so, what it is or does it need to get an address from a DHCP server. If it uses a fixed address, presumably you can configure it with one that is suitable for use with your router.
