what cables are you using? Have you checked that the connections are good?

Is your laptop currently setup to login to a company network / domain?

If so, there are different approaches to take.

If not, as howard60 says, simply run the network setup wizard on the XP PC, make the floppy that it offers at the end of wizard, then run the floppy on the ME PC.

Make sure all firewalls are uninstalled before trying to setup the network, then reinstall once the network is OK.
