Network HD or HD through hub

Is there a difference between getting a stand alone network hard drive or getting a usb hard drive and connecting it to a wired or wireless hub. I am looking at a buffalo 750gb network HD but it seems cheaper to buy the stand alone and then buy the hub that gives me a print server etc. I want to be able to automatically back up files from my 3 wireless pcs and my sons itunes. thanks for any help

A USB drive needs to be coupled to a PC on the network, shared and that PC needs to be on for other PCs to use the drive.

A network drive is coupled to a router and is accessible to any PC connected to the network.
