Network Error - no logon servers available?

Work network with an XP Pro server, a domain server running Linux and 10 or so workstations running NT4/XP Pro.

"XP Server\Data is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the system administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."

This error message has been appearing over the last month spontaneously and without warning in the middle of the day on perhaps two random machines. Sometimes a reboot of the server and domain server cures it but other times not. Sometimes just persistence suddenly allows the user to regain access to the server. Any Ideas please?
