Network dialup

I have a simple ethernet network of a Windows XP PC connected to a Windows 98 PC. Firewall is disabled on the network. The problem I have is that when the computers are connected, my XP machine randomly wants to dial up to the internet. This does not happen when they are disconnected. Is there a setting I need to alter? Thank you for any help.

Have you run such as Spybot on the98 PC. It is just possible that you have a dialler installed. Just as likely is one of the progs on your 98 machine (anything from windows update on) is trying to log in to check for updates.

I have my internet connection on Win98 computer set to "never dial a connection" in Internet Explorer. Should I completely remove my dialup connection from Win98?
