Can someone please advise on the difference between LAN and 1394 connection

LAN means a "Local Area Network".

In your Network Connections folder, you probably have a "1394 Connection" and a "Local Area Connection".

The 1394 Connection is "Firewire" and, although it can be used for networking two computers directly, it is unusual to use this method.

The Local Area Connection is your ethernet network adapter, used to connect to other network devices such as another PC, a network hub/switch/router or ethernet modem.

You probably could have found this out by clicking on an empty part of the desktop and then pressing F1 and using the os help which will also search for answers on-line for you
