Network card is freezing XP

Windows XP is freezing up, maybe once a day - I have to reboot. Event viewer says "The system detected that network adapter \DEVICE\ TCPIP ..... was disconnected from the network, and the adapter's network configuration has been released. If the network adapter was not disconnected, this may indicate that it has malfunctioned. Please contact your vendor for updated drivers."

However, my network card (RTL 8187) is disabled! I don't use it. I have tried updating the driver, and then going back to the old driver - no joy. The board is Asus P5K premium. Any ideas?

Device manager also lists a 1394 Net adaptor and 2 Ethernet devices.

Or - Is this a device that I can unplug from the motherboard (to hopefully solve this problem) or is it part of the board??
